This is a Japanese-themed handcraft activity based on Koinobori, or carp streamers, which are traditionally flown in Japan during Children’s Day (May 5th). These colorful fish-shaped windsocks are used to celebrate the health and happiness of children, and are often displayed on poles outside homes throughout late April and early May.
In this activity, children will enjoy stitching along the dotted holes using a child-safe needle and yarn. Unlike traditional outline stitching, this design features zigzag stitching for the carp’s scales. Sewing each part carefully — especially with a double stitch on the scales — results in a beautiful, textured finish. When multiple Koinobori are completed, they can be strung together and attached to a stick to resemble a real streamer display.
For added creativity, you can print on white drawing paper and color the background with crayons or markers before stitching. Alternatively, you can use colored cardstock for a quick and vibrant look. Changing thread colors also adds to the festive, colorful effect.
This activity is recommended for children aged 3 to 4 years and up. For children under 3, adults should assist with hole punching (with a pin or awl). This is a wonderful fine motor activity that encourages focus and coordination — perfect for Montessori-inspired learning at home.
