This activity helps children sort a variety of invertebrates into five groups: arthropods, echinoderms, mollusks, cnidarians, and sponges. It’s a fun Montessori-inspired classification work that encourages observation and critical thinking, while naturally deepening children’s knowledge—especially for those who love animals.

All cards are designed as double-sided pairs. After printing, simply glue the front and back together to create sturdy, easy-to-handle cards. Each group’s name card includes a simple explanation on the back, making it easier for adults to introduce each category to children in a clear and engaging way.

Since the names of invertebrate groups can be more unfamiliar than vertebrate categories, they may feel a bit challenging at first for children. To support understanding and add a sense of fun, we’ve included friendly nicknames for each group:

Arthropods are the “Crunchy Legs Team”
Echinoderms are the “Flappy Team”
Mollusks are the “Softie Team”
Cnidarians are the “Wavy Team”
Sponges are the “Still Team”

Once the explanation is done, place all five name cards in a row. Then children classify the animal cards by placing them below the correct group. If a child looks unsure at the beginning, you can help by placing one sample animal under each group first. With this visual hint, most children will be able to proceed on their own from the second card onward.

When all the cards are placed, turn them over for self-checking. Each group is color-coded and marked with an icon on the back, helping children see if something is out of place and learn through natural discovery.

This product is a digital PDF download. After purchase, print the data on A4-size slightly thick paper. Laminating the cards will make them durable and suitable for repeated use.

Both Japanese and English versions are included.

This is a great hands-on activity that invites children to explore the fascinating world of invertebrates while building curiosity and understanding.
