This card set focuses on repetitive onomatopoeia (reduplicated onomatopoeia), such as “pika-pika” (shiny), “fuwa-fuwa” (fluffy), and “nuru-nuru” (slimy), where the same sounds are repeated.

The gentle rhythm of these repeated sounds is easy for young children to enjoy and helps foster an interest in language while naturally enriching vocabulary.

First, children can arrange the picture cards and match the corresponding word cards underneath. It is also fun to enjoy the activity together with friends.

Since onomatopoeia is unique to each language, there is no separate English version of this material. However, these cards can still be enjoyed by children learning Japanese, bilingual families, and anyone interested in Japanese language and culture.

As children grow older, they can also enjoy using only the picture cards and guessing, “What onomatopoeia would fit this picture?” In many cases, there is no single correct answer. Rather than focusing on right or wrong, adults are encouraged to value the child’s own expressions and enjoy the richness and creativity of language together.

This set includes 40 pairs of cards. However, presenting all of them at once may feel overwhelming for some children. Please divide the cards into smaller groups according to each child’s interests and readiness.

Cover pages for dividing the cards into eight groups are included, allowing you to organize the cards in whatever quantity works best for your child.

A control chart is also included, allowing children to check their own work independently.

For durability, we recommend printing on slightly thicker paper and laminating the cards so they can be enjoyed again and again.
