Bus Ride Sewing Activity Sheets

Where shall we go on the bus today? These sewing activity sheets invite children to thread their way from one bus stop to the next while imagining a day out.

Destinations include the zoo, park, Grandma’s house, hot springs, bakery, amusement park, kindergarten, farm, aquarium and seaside. Children can imagine the fun ahead as they work: “What shall we see at the zoo?” or “What shall we buy at the bakery?”

The PDF includes two types of sheets to choose from according to your child’s age and sewing experience.

Page 1: Simple straight-line sewing strips
These simple strips are intended for children up to around two and a half years old, or those just starting sewing activities. Children pass the thread in a straight line from one bus stop to the stop at their destination. The short route gives them one destination to work towards.

Page 2: A bus journey with transfers
These sheets are intended for children over two and a half who are becoming familiar with sewing, and for children aged three and above. There are more bus stops and longer routes. Children imagine changing buses along the way and visiting different places before reaching their destination. “Let’s catch the next bus here!” adds a story to each stitch.

Ages are a guide. Choose and print page 1 or page 2 according to your child’s interests and how they are getting on with the activity.

Preparation and use
Set your printer to A4, print on slightly thicker paper such as drawing paper, and cut the individual activity sheets apart.

You will need a blunt tapestry needle, thread, scissors, a small pushpin or punching tool, and a cork board.

Place the sheet on the cork board and make holes at the black dots. For children under three, an adult should prepare the holes in advance. Children can then begin by passing the needle and thread through the prepared holes. An adult should stay nearby and supervise the use of the tools.
